My good friend from the states came to visit Taiwan and wanted to try this popular brunch place called ‘Hajime te’ in Kaohsiung, therefore we took time from our schedule to come here.
This Hajime te is located on Mingcheng road, it kind of easy to miss if you are driving, you can look for the empty lot right in front of the store.
The hanging bike on the cafe wall is quite beautiful and gives off a good vibe! I like how the bike’s white body compliments the brown seat and basket, I kind of want to ride this bike for a picnic trip ???
You need to get a number from the waitress and they’ll call your number when they are ready to seat you.
The wooden ceiling was reminiscent of cabins I’ve lived in back in the states, very heartwarming.
The cafe also sells Japanese kitchenware, and they all appears to be high quality. Some of these kitchenware are also used in the store.
The inside of cafe is quite spacious and the decorations and seatings aren’t cramped.
The furnitures use natural wood and black metal frame, the simplistic yet organized style reminds me of Muji.
Self-served water and napkins
The restroom is located in the back of the store
When I open the door, I was surprised as I almost thought I was in an art gallery due to the hanging black and white art pieces and the lighting.
The bathroom is quite a distance away from the cafe, to me that is a big plus.
You can directly order from the menu and bring the menu to the counter, you pay after you finish eating.
“Hajime te” mainly sells brunch, the food includes Japanese-American, Japanese-Breakfast, Japanese-Entree.
Here you can see every page of the menu. The menu introduces the “Hajime te”‘s goal and business idea as well as having cute hand-drawn depiction of the meals.
The menu is stored in the cube like cabinet under the counter. Looks organized and open.
Breakfast and Entree came with black soy bean milk. It smells quite good, but a bit on the sweet side.
Milk tea (Switching out the drink from the meal gives you a 50% off discount)
There is a hint of caramel flavor compared to a regular black tea latte, very smooth and delicious.
Green tea Cafeaulait
At first, the drink was kind of bitter and can sometimes still taste the texture of grainy matcha powder. Later, I only taste the flavorful matcha taste.
The two baked onigiri had a large serving and completely filled the table, what a bountiful feast.
Karaage, chawanmushi (egg custard), salad with wafu dressing, onigiri
The plate and the food creates a magnificent visual here.
The chawanmushi was tender and delicious and not too salty. You can taste the katsuobushi (dried fish) in the chawanmushi. The Karaageis just so-so, the skin was too hard and meat too dry.
The baked salmon onigiri is on top of a stove with hot stones, this way it continues to cook the seaweed to keep it crispy. Quite thoughtful!
After baking, the onigiri has both the delicious smell of salmon and soy sauce, every bite taste more delicious than the previuos bite.
Soysauce-baked eel onigiri $340
Everything is the same except the onigiri.
Salad with house-made Japanese wufu dressing
This house-made dress was amazing!! It’s sour and sweet taste is very appetizing. I feel like this dish could be a main dish at any other restaurant. The salad’s components is also not just your everyday salad compoenents.
It has baked tofu, seeweed, lettuce, baby corn, tomato. The dressing is on the side so you can control the taste of the salad.
The eel was huge and thick, almost covering the whole onigiri. The seaweed and the eel’s sweet sauce is a perfect complement to each other. Every bite is full of the delicious taste of the onigiri, delicious and filling.
The surface of the onigiri is crispy after baking, and I love the texture.
Overall, I would recommend this cafe to everyone. Recently in Taiwan, “Hajime te” is a brunch cafe where I went that has great service. Every waitress greeted me with a smile and go over the menu and meals in great details patiently. They also promptly clean the tables and ask about how our meal was. Interesting enough, this kind of high-quality service did not charge service tip. For the food itself, the detailed presentation puts you in a good mood before even taking a bite. What’s better is that it is not just looks, it taste amazing as well! There is also a considerable amount of space between each seating which makes me very comfortable. I would come here again!
